メロディック・デスメタルの影響系譜
メロディック・デスメタルは、デスメタルの暴力性にIron Maidenの旋律ギターを接ぎ木した一点から始まる。 その配線をはっきり示すのがIn Flamesだ。Maidenの旋律ギターとデスの暴力性を狙って結成された、と記録される。 舞台はスウェーデンのイェーテボリ。At the Gates、In Flames、Dark Tranquillityの三巨頭が1990年代半ばに型を鋳造し、Carcassの旋律化がそこに合流する。 そしてこの旋律は北のフィンランド（Children of Bodom）へ、海を越えたアメリカのメタルコア（Killswitch Engage、Trivium）へと分岐していく。 年表ビューに切り替えれば、この世代の流れがそのまま縦に伸びて見える。
イェーテボリで型が鋳られる
起点はひとつのバンドの解散だった。Grotesqueが解散したあと、リンドバーグとスヴェンソンが1990年にAt the Gatesを結成する。 このAt the Gatesが1995年の『Slaughter of the Soul』で後続の青写真を刻み、Dark Tranquillityは『The Gallery』でジャンルそのものを定義したと見なされる。 続くIn Flamesの『The Jester Race』が基礎を確立し、そのリフにはIron MaidenとJudas Priestの影響がはっきり聴き取れる。 同郷の三者が数年のうちに揃ったこの結節点が、のちに「Gothenburg sound」と呼ばれる型になった。
旋律の血をどこから引くか
イェーテボリの旋律は、二つの上流から水を引いている。ひとつはNWOBHM式のツインハーモニーで、Iron Maidenの様式はメロディック・デスメタルの中核要素と見なされる。 もうひとつがCarcassだ。1993年の『Heartwork』がジャンルの旋律化を推し進めたとされ、そのCarcassを離れたマイケル・アモットはArch Enemyを結成してこの系譜を直に引き継いだ。 フィンランドではChildren of Bodomが分岐点になる。ベーシストは「最初に似ていると思わせたのはNortherだった」と語っており、ここからNorther、Kalmahへと同型のメロデス×パワーが枝分かれする。
海を越えて、メタルコアの背骨へ
イェーテボリの旋律は2000年前後に大西洋を渡り、アメリカのメタルコアの背骨になった。 Killswitch EngageはAt the Gatesの旋律的な残虐性に着想を得たとされ、The Black Dahlia Murderのデビュー作はAt the Gatesへの露骨な傾倒だったと記録される。 In Flamesの波及はさらに直截で、Triviumのマット・ヒーフィは「In FlamesがなければTriviumは無い」と言い切っている。 こうしてスウェーデンの旋律は、In Flames経由でメタルコアという巨大ジャンルへ流れ込んだ。各ノードをクリックすれば、その枝の先のページへ飛べる。
